HEALTH AND FITNESS

‘Tis the Season to Be Jolly Well’
It’s often said that without our health, we have nothing. As we face a winter of restrictions and health challenges, looking after ourselves is of paramount importance. It’s great to see people more health conscious this year, perhaps more so than any other.
Doing some daily mild to moderate exercise is great for balancing the immune system. The notion that we can ‘boost’ our immune system is incorrect. If your immune system is healthy and has a balanced response, you can’t boost it.
Perhaps you’re susceptible to colds or feeling down this time of year. If you think your immune system isn’t as good as it should be, maybe try some of these immune-supporting tips:
Daily exercise that you enjoy for thirty minutes
Stop eating when 80% full
Eat fruit and vegetables of different colours, some of which are raw
Try a homemade bone broth (perfect for gloomy winter days!)
Get as much outdoor light as possible to help improve sleep
Consider a vitamin D supplement (1000 - 4000IU)
I remember my Sports Science lecturer at university telling us that there’s a fine line between being super fit, and being ill. Vigorous training can put an increased strain on the body which means it may be weaker if it has to tackle a virus.
Most of us won’t be doing that anyway but it’s food for thought for someone who is keen on long runs or bike rides, particularly in winter and with the extra threats we are facing in the pandemic.
Another thing I’ve found enjoyable and helpful is a set of breathing techniques called the ‘Wim Hof Method’. They were developed by the Dutch athlete Wim Hof and there’s some evidence, although not conclusive, that it can have a positive effect on the immune system.
Wishing you all the best over the festive season, stay safe and let’s look after one another.
